Withdrawal Management Facilities
Withdrawal Management Facilities – Are facilities where you can go to safely withdraw from your drug of choice. Often these facilities are voluntary, are non-medical, and provide support and resources for exploring your next step in substance recovery.
There are two types of withdrawal management facilities, one medical and one non-medical. Medical detox is required for certain types of substances that can be dangerous to stop using on your own without medical supervision. Humber River Hospital has a medical detox unit.
The second type of Withdrawal Management facility is non-medical, and this supports many different substances that are commonly used. It is common that a patient at one of these facilities may need withdrawal medication upon admission, and these facilities are usually associated with a medical facility of some sort, however they do not have Doctors or Nurses on staff.
The type of substances that can be helped at a non-medical detox but are not limited to are Alcohol, Stimulants, most Opioids, Cannabis products and Hallucinogens.
Most withdrawal management facilities are short term residential, usually from 7 to 10 days in length. Usually, at Withdrawal Management Facilities is where resources are found for in-patient and out-patient treatment centres.

Short Term Care In-Patient Treatment Centres – Are facilities that typically run less than 30 days in stay, have programming available that is related to dealing with self esteem, relapse prevention, self-help groups, counselling and other support services custom tailored to the programming of the treatment facility. Typically, it is expected within Ontario that if it is your first time through a treatment facility, then you would be expected to go to one of these facilities first. Often, group and individual counselling is made available.

Long Term Care In-Patient Treatment Centres – Are programs that run greater than 30 days, and have programming like short-term in-patient care, however, have additional supports dealing with trauma, and other related issues to substance abuse.
Out-Patient Programming – There are some programs that are out-patient groups usually ranging from one to two weeks, and offer supports related to self-esteem.
Private Coverage Facilities – There are some treatment facilities that offer a faster admission time when someone pays upfront for treatment, or when they have the medical coverage included in a work benefit plan. Often these private coverage facilities will offer treatment beds that are covered by OHIP however the wait list in some cases could be rather long. In other words, if you don’t have private coverage through a medical benefits plan, applying to one of these facilities might not be the best choice.
OHIP Coverage Facilities – There are some facilities that offer a wide range of services that are completely covered by OHIP. There is a misperception that private coverage treatment facilities offer better services, this is simply not the case in this writer’s opinion. Many treatment centres have excellent programming, and in some cases better treatment options for varied concurrent disorders.
